Once the weather starts to cool down, I naturally reach for something warm to drink in the afternoon. I love the idea of a latte, but caffeine has never agreed with me. Even one cup leaves me feeling jittery, affects my sleep, and usually suppresses my appetite enough that I end up skipping real food.
I started looking for a caffeine-free alternative that felt a little more satisfying than a cup of tea. After experimenting with a few different options, this chaga latte became my favorite.
I usually make it with homemade almond milk (it’s surprisingly easy and keeps for a few days in the fridge), but coconut milk works just as well if that’s what you have on hand.
It’s become one of my favorite afternoon drinks during the fall and winter. Whenever I’m tempted to grab a pumpkin spice latte, this usually satisfies that craving instead.
What Is Chaga?
Chaga is a mushroom that grows on birch trees in cold climates. It’s been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is naturally rich in antioxidants.
I like using it as a caffeine-free alternative when I’m craving something warm in the afternoon. The powder has a mild, earthy flavor that reminds me a little of coffee and blends easily into warm milk.
My Favorite Chaga Brand
Not all chaga powders are created equal. I’ve been using Vimergy Chaga because they prioritize third-party testing and avoid fillers, binders, preservatives, and artificial colors. Their products are gluten-free, vegan, and available on Amazon or directly through their website.
I’ve used several of their supplements over the years and have always had a good experience with them.
Why I Love This Chaga Latte
I keep coming back to this recipe because it feels a little more satisfying than a regular cup of tea while still fitting into my routine. It has a mild, earthy flavor that’s similar to coffee, without the caffeine or afternoon crash.
The best part is how simple it is. There aren’t any artificial ingredients, and I never have to worry about feeling jittery or struggling to fall asleep later that night. It’s become an easy afternoon swap that I genuinely look forward to.
If you’re using homemade almond milk, be sure to strain it so the latte stays smooth and creamy. Store-bought milk works well too if you’re short on time.
And if you’re a pumpkin spice fan, add a sprinkle on top for a little nostalgia.
Chaga Latte Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup non-dairy milk (homemade almond milk or coconut milk work best)
- 1 teaspoon chaga powder
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup (or to taste)
- Optional: cinnamon, vanilla extract, pumpkin spice, or collagen peptides
If you want a little scoop of protein, I usually use Naked Nutrition collagen because it dissolves well and doesn’t change the flavor. If you’re interested in trying collagen, you can read my full Naked Nutrition Collagen Review.
Instructions
- Heat the milk until warm, but not boiling.
- Whisk in the chaga powder.
- Stir in the maple syrup and any optional spices.
- Froth until creamy and pour into your favorite mug.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon or pumpkin spice, if desired.
Take five minutes and enjoy.
Before You Go…
I didn’t know how this little experiment would turn out. I just wanted something that felt as satisfying as my favorite fall coffee order without the caffeine. A few years later, I’m still making this recipe. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear what you think.
