My Favorite Non-Toxic Hair Styling Products

My Favorite Non-Toxic Hair Styling Products

Want great hair without having to use a ton of chemicals? Here are my favorite non-toxic hair styling products right now. I’ve been testing out healthier products to maintain my mane.

For the most part, I’ve been letting my hair air dry since it’s summer. I’d rather not waste my time blow drying my hair in these hot temps knowing the humidity is going to curl it right back up the second I step outside.

When it comes to products, I tend to be a minimalist. While I’m lucky to have thick hair, it does require a little work to make it look polished. In the late ’90s/early 2000s I used excessive amounts of gel to keep my hair in place. That crunchy look did not age well.

As the times changed, I went in the opposite direction, attempting to leave my hair natural without the use of products. I yearned for the low-maintenance hair of the women featured in JCREW magazines. That wasn’t such a great look for me either. I didn’t have low-maintenance hair, and without any product,  my hair was very frizzy and puffy.

Now, I’ve accepted that my hair needs a little help from hair styling products. I’ve been very selective about the brands I use opting for products with more natural ingredients and less toxic chemicals. I still highlight my hair which includes the use of chemicals, but that’s every few months. These are the products I’m exposing myself to every day.

Here are my favorite non-toxic hair styling products to keep my hair healthy, smooth, and frizz-free.

My Favorite Non-Toxic Hair Styling Products

From detanglers, to balms and volumizing products – I’m sharing them all. Each of these products can be used for air-dried and blow-dried looks. I like them because they don’t leave my hair heavy, crunchy or overly styled but provide just enough support to keep my hair smooth in check.

Honest Company Conditioning Detangler

This Honest Company Detangler Spray is a product I’ve been using for a few years.  I cannot live without a detangling spray. My hair gets very knotted especially when I let it air dry. Honest Company makes a no-frills detangler. I first discovered it in Whole Foods. Now I order it off Amazon because I can’t always find it there. It’s an affordable price point and works well. I do need to spray liberally but it’s very light and does not build up in your hair.

I’ve also tried Jennifer Aniston’s, Lolavie Glossing Detangler. It was very moisturizing and smelled heavenly. I found I needed to use a generous amount for it to work and the price point is much higher.

Evolv Volumizing Mousse

I recently tried Evolv Mousse with great results. I’ve noticed my hair needed a little lift at the root, especially when I let it air dry. This product helps me to achieve a little volume without looking overly styled. It’s also lightweight, and seamlessly absorbs into your hair. I use it for both air-dry and blow-dry looks.

Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray

I love Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray to prime my hair for blow drying and air drying. It helps to hold your style and to protect from heat exposure. It contains Vitamin B and rice protein which support shine and lift. When I use this prep spray, my hair is noticeably smoother after blowouts. It’s good for all hair types and textures.

Evolv Wonder Balm

Evolv Wonder Balm is a great gel alternative for my girls with curls. It can also be used to tame frizz in straight hair. No more overly gelled late ’90’s hair. I’ve found it to leave my hair soft, while also calming frizz. You don’t need to use much either. This balm is free of silicone, parabens, phthalates, and gluten. It’s also vegan and cruelty-free.

Two Hair Styling Tips

First off, I am not a hair expert by any means. Just a woman with high-maintenance hair who has learned a thing or two over the years.

Good hair starts with the right haircut

I was recently forced to change salons because my hair stylist’s schedule was challenging to work with. I ended up at a new salon where I was assigned to a hairstylist who was a curly hair expert. It was one of the best haircuts I’ve had since moving out of New York City 4 years ago. I learned better hair days start with finding a hairstylist who is an expert on your hair type.

When searching for a new hair stylist, do research, read reviews, and look up their Instagram accounts which usually feature their clients. It can be scary to switch but also life-changing when you find the right person.

Good brushes make styling easier

I have tried SO many brushes over the years. Large round ones, small round ones, boar bristled ones, detangling ones, and even the Mason Pearson. The two that I’ve had the most luck with are:

Wet Paddle Brush Detangler

Using a wet paddle brush has been great for detangling my knotted hair post shower. Especially, when combined with a detangler. I have wavy/curly hair and need something that can gently untangle the knots. I purchased mine years ago at Sephora. They don’t make the same one anymore but I found a similar, highly rated one on Amazon.

Olivia Garden Ceramic & Ion Round Brush

This extra-long Olivia Garden Ceramic & Ion Round Brush has been a game changer for blow drying my hair. It heats up quickly and dries hair 25% faster. It comes in different sizes. I’m using the 1 3/4” inch barrel. I find it easy to use and style my medium length, thick wavy/curly hair.

I also use the Dyson hair dryer. It’s lightweight which makes the process easier.

Final Thoughts on My Favorite Non-Toxic Hair Styling Products

Summer is here, and thanks to a few hair styling products, I’m enjoying a low maintenance routine. Both my natural, air-dried hair and blow-dried hair hasn’t looked this healthy, smooth, and frizz-free in a long time. I’ve learned you don’t need to layer on the chemicals to have great hair. Thankfully, these brands and products are making hair care healthier, and less time consuming. I will continue to test out new ones but these are my favorite non-toxic hair styling products right now.
