We just got back from a family trip to Puglia, in Southern Italy. The heel of the boot to be exact. As expected, the food was unreal. It was a week filled with fresh seafood, al dente pasta, the freshest tomatoes, and of course, olive oil. It was heaven.
But there was one Italian food ritual I didn’t expect, and it stuck with me more than any single dish: they added fresh herbs to just about everything.
Not just the usual stuff like pasta or grilled fish, but even on fruit! Yes, fruit. This one thing completely changed the way I prepare my meals at home.

Herbs in Everything: A Southern Italian Ritual
The herb trend caught my attention when I ordered a fruit plate for dessert, and it came topped with fresh oregano! Oregano… on fruit? Back home, I would have never thought to combine those flavors. But it was surprisingly good. It was a little spicy, a little sweet, and a completely new flavor experience.
From that moment on, I started to notice herbs everywhere. Parsley sprinkled over seafood, basil on tomatoes, mint on fish! No plate was without a pop of something green.
The herbs felt intentional and sometimes they turned a simple dish into something unexpected.
Why It Stood Out: A Contrast to American Eating Habits
Back home, fresh herbs feel like an afterthought. I keep plenty of dried herbs in my spice cabinet because they last forever and are easy to use. But fresh? Unless a recipe specifically calls for them, I usually skip them. And even when I buy a bunch of parsley or dill, most of it ends up wilting in my fridge before I can use it all.
But in Southern Italy, fresh herbs are used daily and generously. They are not just a garnish to make the dish look pretty, they are an important part of the dish. This simple practice changed how I look at food prep. It reminded me that food doesn’t need to be complicated or trendy to feel nourishing. Sometimes, all it needs is a handful of herbs.

The Health Benefits of Herbs
As I started adding herbs to my meals at home (mostly basil because that’s what I planted this year), I also began digging into the health benefits of fresh herbs. They are more than just a garnish, they add lots of nutritional value! Plus, lots of antioxidants.
- Basil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains antioxidants that help protect your cells from stress.
- Oregano has antimicrobial and antiviral benefits. Plus lots of antioxidants!
- Mint can help soothe digestion, and reduce bloating.
- Parsley is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
- Rosemary can boost memory and lower anxiety!
These herbs don’t just make your meals prettier, they can also make them healthier!

The Takeaway: A Simple Food Ritual Worth Keeping
This one trip gave me a small but powerful healthy eating habit: fresh herbs, every day. Not just as a garnish but as a real ingredient.
To make it easy, I’m planting a few in a windowsill planter that I can bring inside come winter. That way, herbs are always within reach, and I don’t have to feel guilty about another forgotten bunch of parsley in the fridge.
Sometimes I think we overcomplicate things here in the U.S. with our powders and potions, and the latest biohacking wellness trend. But the Southern Italians reminded me that wellness can be simple. It can be as easy as adding something fresh and green to your plate.
No fuss. Just fresh.
P.S. This morning I added a basil leaf to my berry smoothie. It added a slight hint of flavor and wasn’t nearly as weird as I thought it would be.
