I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the growing number of healthy foods to buy at Costco. I always thought of Costco as a megastore for unhealthy, processed snacks to buy in bulk. You can still buy those things but they are also expanding into organic, cleaner foods too.
It can be expensive to eat healthily in America. Some countries in Europe, make healthy food more affordable than unhealthy. They tax the processed food to incentivize people to eat better. I wish that were the case here. The cost of clean food continues to rise making it more and more challenging to eat the way we want. With places like Costco, allowing you to buy healthy items in bulk for less, we are creating an environment that allows for people to afford it.
Recently, I became a Costco member to buy things like paper goods in bulk. It’s nice there is more to buy than a lifetime supply of toilet paper and frozen dinners. Here are some of the healthy foods I was excited to find.
Healthy Foods to Buy at Costco
Avocado oil
Avocado oil has a higher smoke point making it safer to use cooking at high temperatures. You can heat it up to 500 degrees. I opt for this oil whenever I’m frying or sautéing. It has a fairly neutral flavor and is a good source of healthy fats.
Organic maple syrup
I can never leave Costco without stocking up on organic maple syrup. I use maple syrup for everything from pancakes to sweetening baked goods. Maple syrup is expensive so buying it in larger quantities is helpful.
Wild-caught salmon
I was completely surprised when I came across wild-caught fish! When it comes to seafood, wild-caught is the way to go. Farm-raised fish cons include being raised in confined spaces known to spread disease. They are also fed a special diet which causes the fish to be grey in color. A red dye is added to their food to change the color. Typically, I make a trip to Whole Foods for wild-caugh fish. It’s nice to have the option to buy it here too.
Kombucha
The last time I was there, I noticed cases of Health-Ade Kombucha! Kombucha is a fermented tea with probiotic benefits. When purchased individually, these can easily add up in price. Some retailers sell them for as much as $5 a bottle. Buying them in bulk at Costco is a great way to save a bit on this healthy tonic.
Frozen fruit
Frozen fruit is a staple in my house to make daily smoothies. Costco’s Kirkland brand sells frozen organic blueberries and other organic brands. It’s worth the trip for this!
Organic fruits and vegetables
Costco is now offering a selection of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. One item I never leave without is a box of organic dates. I use these to sweeten my smoothies. Buying them here saves you a bit versus the dedicated health food stores and smaller chains.
Organic coconut water
Last but not least, a favorite health food to buy at Costco is organic coconut water by the case. I drink an insane amount of coconut water. I drink so much coconut water that we launched our brand of coconut water called Little Palm! Little Palm is way tastier but it’s also a bit pricier due to the premium coconuts that are used. Costco’s Kirkland organic coconut water is affordable and available by the case.
Takeaways
These are my favorite healthy foods to buy at Costo right now. Excited to see what else they add as the demand for healthier food rises! Fingers crossed for grass-fed meat and ghee!
