Bedtime stories are a special part of our nightly routine. My little guy loves snuggling up with a book before bed—it’s the perfect wind-down activity. Right now, we have about eight board books in the rotation, and while I truly love The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I wouldn’t mind if it magically disappeared for a little while. (Pretty sure I can recite that one by heart!)
At this age, I’ve learned that short and interactive books work best. Their attention spans are still developing, so books with only a few words per page tend to hold their interest. We especially love interactive books with flaps to lift, textures to feel, and other fun surprises.
After going through a lot of books between my two boys, I’ve rounded up our absolute favorite bedtime reads—the ones that have been a hit with both kids and have survived multiple rounds of bedtime storytelling.
The Best Bedtime Books for Babies
Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
We love Dear Zoo! It’s high up on my list! There is a new animal to discover on each page, and my kids love opening the flaps to uncover which one it will be. At this age, they don’t always have the attention span for listening to wordy books so I’ve found this one to work well.
2. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown Moon
Goodnight Moon is a classic goodnight story. To be honest, I’ve always found it a little odd, but both of my kids have loved it at this age. It’s a little quirky but there are lots of random objects for them to point out.
3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a timeless classic is filled with bright colors and fun food illustrations. My little one loves pointing out all the treats the caterpillar eats (especially the cupcakes and lollipops). We’ve read this book a thousand times, but it’s still a favorite!
4. You’re My Little Cuddle Bug by Nicola Edwards
This sweet board book is filled with adorable, colorful illustrations of ladybugs, caterpillars, and butterflies. It’s a rhyming book, making it extra fun to read aloud. You’re My Little Cuddle Bug is perfect for bedtime snuggles and has a whole series of similar books if you’re looking for more.
5. Pajama Time by Sandra Boynton
If you’re looking for a bedtime book with a fun, rhythmic flow, Pajama Time is a great pick. It’s about animals getting ready for bed and ends with a gentle reminder to hop into bed and turn out the lights. It’s the perfect way to transition to sleep.
6. Where’s The Chick? by Ingela P Arrhenius
Where’s The Chick is a super quick and engaging read with hidden animals covered by felt flaps for little ones to lift. The flaps add a sensory element, and the final page features a mirror—always a crowd-pleaser.
7. Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker
The Construction Site books have been a hit in our house! This one follows different trucks as they wrap up their day and get ready for bed. There are also special versions with flaps available, which make it even more interactive for younger toddlers.
What Are Your Favorite Bedtime Books?
These are our current favorites for bedtime reading. We usually read three books before lights out, and it’s always fun watching my little one pick which ones he wants. The interactive books, bright colors, and simple text seem to work best at this stage.
I’m eyeing Llama Llama Red Pajama next—have you read it? Drop your favorite bedtime books in the comments! I could definitely use more ideas. 😊
