Do you ever feel guilty about the amount of time wasted scrolling through social feeds each week? I know that I certainly do. That’s why I’ve committed to taking a break every once in a while with a 3-day social media detox. It’s an easy way to reset and rebalance. Gain precious time back to your calendar, tackle projects you’ve been procrastinating on, or just rest your mind by digging into a good book instead.
The Effects of Social Media
Most of the time, social media is my default for filling idle time. While that might seem harmless, I often find that it makes me feel kinda crappy afterward.
Studies done across numerous countries including the US have shown a correlation between social media use and depression. I’m not surprised at all. We are constantly bombarded with pictures and videos of matcha lattes, trips to Europe, and everyone else’s seemingly perfect lives. It is easy to think everyone else has it all together or some else’s life is better than yours. The thing is we don’t typically see the behind-the-scenes footage, only the good parts.
Some may argue that social media is how we stay connected and maintain relationships but is it really? We could also use that same time to pick up the phone and call someone. Or meet a friend for coffee. We could create memories instead of watching others create them. While social media is not all bad, it could be helpful to give yourself a break.
